HUMAN TRAFFICKING / ADOPTION RING DISCOVERED IN NIGERIA

A disturbing trend seems to have taken hold in Africa.  Countries that have more lax legislation on matters of adoption have taken to ''produce" children for the purpose of selling them to eager parents from abroad.

One such baby factory was raided this week in Imo state. in Nigeria.  But instead of finding an adoption ring, authorities might have discovered something far worse.

Inside the filthy tenement were seventeen pregnant girls and 11 babies, in what could be described as 'the hatchery from hell".

The prime suspect, the woman who is at the head of this squalid operation, has fled, and authorities are trying to identify her and bring her to justice.

To make matters worse, the pregnant girls said that they received only one meal a day, and were kept in a prison like state.

All the girls had been impregnated by the same 23 year old man, who is the sole person found and arrested in the case.

More worrisome is the fact that the babies are actually part of human trafficking ring, where the babies are sold for the purpose of child pornography and prostitution.

Each baby is believed to have been sold for a sum of approximately 6,500 dollars.

Some of the girls in the birthing ring are taken from the streets already pregnant, with the offer of caring for them, since in the country their pregnancy is seen as a stigma.  After delivery however, they are kept as incubators, for an endless string of births.

In some cases, the babies are used for organ harvesting, authorities believe.
