ISRAEL ASKS RUSSIA NOT TO SELL SYRIA S-300s ON THE SAME DAY IT DECLARES IT WILL START BUILDING 300 NEW SETTLEMENTS.

On the same day that Israel announced it would begin construction on 300 new settlement homes, in contraddiction with earlier accords that it would freeze plans on all new settlements, it has also asked Russia that it not furnish Syria with a planned cache of S-300 air defense systems.

The weapons would help Bashar al Assad in contrasting military interventions or air assaults at a time when a resolution is needed in the two year civil war.

The initial delivery from Russia is due to take place in about 90 days.

The S-300 is a fundamental weapon in war since it can shoot down planes and missiles within a 125 miles range.  Although Syria already has such weapons, it would noticeably increase its ability to defend itself in the event of a foreign airstrike from additional positions.

The request also comes after recent strikes against Syria effected by Israeli air force in pin point missions launched from long range position, which seemed to elude Syria's defences. The attacks were aimed at destroying certain armed positions, according to Israeli statements

Russia however, may not comply so easily, especially after loudly voicing its opposition to the unilaterally conducted air strikes.  Russia in a sense, has accused Israel of commencing an offensive which will later include other Western military powers.

However, some military experts doubt that the shipment will afford Assad a decisive advantage if Isreal were to strike, since Israel claims a net superiority in technology in that area.  It also would take many more months for the weaponry to be fully operational after delivery.
