Although the Gulf states have declined the existence of any detrimental effects of the Macondo field spill on their hatcheries and fish catches, the state of Texas has now issued a warning that fish caught off the Texas coast has unsafe levels of mercury. Although a previous advisory had been issued on the consumption of Blue Marlin, this marks the first such advisory on contaminant levels in fish catches at large.
Mercury contamination in fish is particularly dangerous to pregnant women, and to small children. The advisory in effect advises only women past child bearing age to eat the catches off the coast of Texas and only in small serving of less than 8 ounces.
Some of the catches that had mercury levels over the TDSHS guidelines are black fin tuna, blue marlin, tunny, crevalle jackfish, king mackerel, swordfish and wahoo.
The warning however makes no implied or direct relation to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Mercury can occur naturally in the water or from waste spillage.
