FORMER PRIME MINISTER'S SON KIDNAPPED BY TALIBAN IN PAKISTAN AHEAD OF SATURDAY'S ELECTIONS

The son of ex prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was kidnapped today in Multan, a few days before the general elections are to take place.

The kidnappers are believed to be Taliban, and the leader of the fundamentalist group, Mehsud, has already claimed responsibility for the crime, even issuing a statement saying that "we don't accept the system of infidels which is called democracy".

The kidnapping occurred as Ali Haider Gilani was going to work.  Gumen on a motorbike sprayed bullets and killed Gilani's secretary, and one of his guards.

Gilani was then pushed into a black Honda at gunpoint.

Gilani was a provincial assembly candidate for the PPP party and two of his brothers are already standing for the national assembly.

Following his abduction, the elections in Multan are in question, since he was running in Saturday's elections for the Multan constituency.

The PPP has been a frequent target of threats from the Taliban due to their secular stance.  The whole election has been targeted, so much so, that many candidates have not been able to campaign on the stump, and have instead opted for door to door campaigning.
