AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN IN WIDENING INITIATIVE TO EMIT FATWAS AGAINST SUICIDE ATTACKS

AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN IN WIDENING INITIATIVE TO EMIT FATWAS AGAINST SUICIDE ATTACKS

In what seems to be a widening initiative to bring to a halt sectarian violence and terror strikes, Afghanistan is joining in by calling for additional fatwas aimed at making such attacks sacrilegious and punishable throughout the region.

Some are doubting that the initiative will have much effect, since most of the Taliban and other terrorist groups do not allow television viewing, or reading any media.

The Taliban, in contrast, has convened, through the years, its own Ulema councils to contrast the edicts with a proclamations that suicide attacks are permissible and sanctioned.

What is more important however, is the renewed effort of collaboration between Pakistan and Afghanistan, a move that could effect change in the way the two countries approach the problem of terrorism.

In fact, moderate Imams are convinced that if the word spreads amongst the general population that such violence is against the tenets of Islam, then young men might not join the terrorist groups so readily.  Without such youths streaming in to join the ranks of the sectarian groups, their existence is threatened.
