One of the largest food retailers in the world, Tesco, has announced that it knows its products contain horsemeat.

A raid by the British food watchdog agency, FSA, has confirmed suspicions that the horse meat found in prepared food comes from suppliers in the the UK.

The raid resulted in the swift placing of seals on a slaughterhouse in Yorkshire named Peter Boddy and its suppliers of horse carcasses Farmbox Meats in west Wales.

French authorities had in fact, pointed to an elaborate scheme of suppliers that involved butchers in Romania, and Dutch and Cypriot traders who disguised the horse meat at beef when it was ultimately used in prepared foods.

What remains to be seen is how wide the network of deception is and for how long this network has been using horse meat in place of beef in violation of food safety rules.
