ISLAMISTS PROTEST DEATH SENTENCE IN BANGLA DESH

Bangla Desh has recently meted a sentence against a notorious islamist implicated in the mass murder of Bangladeshi during the war between Pakistan and Bangla Desh, after which the small country claimed independence with the aid of India.

The decision however, has encountered stiff resistance and protest by the islamist group to which the sentenced belonged.

One person has been killed and more riots are feared as islamists try to overturn the court sentence.

Brick throwing incidents have been reported in the south of the country and in other cities.  Police are trying to restore order, but the riots could continue unabated for a while.

The Jamaat-e-Islami party had called a nationwide strike to protest the sentence of Abdul Quader Molla.  The crimes MOlla has been found guilty of go back more than 40 years,a sentence which in itself is a symptom of the disfunctionality of the Bangla Deshi judiciary.

Molla is now 65, and one of the foremost leader of the islamist party.  Another six islamists have been likewise convicted since the beginning of the year in the context of the war crime tribunal that convicted Molla.  The Islamists were convicted primarily for aiding Pakistan in suppressing the independent movement and for, among other things, killing scores of Bangladeshis during that conflict.

Incendiary bomb attacks have been reported in Rajshahi today, and in the capital, Dhaka, which was abuzz with the fear of attacks.

The army has deployed paramilitary forces and shuttered down schools, offices and businesses to avoid further loss.

To further ignite the resentment of the islamist group, Amnesty international has criticized the sentence because it carried no right to appeal, making it, in international terms, an inhumane process.
