A very strong typhoon has hit the central part of Japan, sending almost a million people scurrying for safety.  Mandatory evacuations are already in place.

The rain has already caused one river to overflow, and has inundated a popular tourist site.

Bullet train services had to be halted through the region.  400 flights have also been grounded.
