THE IRONY OF HISTORY : GERMANY ADMONISHES ISREAL ON UN RIGHT PANEL

It is a irony of history that some countries see their role reversed.  This is the case between Germany and Isreal at the moment: Germany has admonished Isreal to attend a human rights panel seated by the UN on Tuesday.

Germany has even gone so far as to intimate that diplomatic ties with Israel might be compromised if Israel fails to attend.

Israel has in fact cut ties with the UN Human right council, due to the clash between the UN council's probe of human rights violation on Palestinians, and has not announced if it will resume its activity with the international governing body.

The UN, for its part, has also signified that Israel's non compliance will cause a fracture not only with Germany, but with countries around the world, and that it would worsen its standing not only with its enemies, but also with Israel's allies.

Hard line prime minister Netanyahu has failed to respond to any of the prompting so far, even though Israel had promised to re-engage by June of this year.

At stake, of course, are the settlements that Israel continues to plan and build on territory that is slated for or contended as Palestinian territory. Most of the settlement are made for strategic reasons, to avoid having a circular ring of Palestinian landholding around Jerusalem, or other such considerations.

But, at the end of the day, land is being expropriated from Palestinians, often through threats or downright forced evictions.
