INDONESIAN VOLCANO CAUSES 5 DEATHS

A violent volcanic explosion in central Indonesia has caused at least five deaths.  The pyroclastic flows of the volcano reached high into the air.

Mount Rokatenda, which sits on the volcanic island of Palue, spewed hot hash that reached the nearby coastline of mainland Indonesia.

Rokatenda was expected to blow, since signs of an impending eruption had been forecast due to the tremors that have been rocking the small island since October.  The small island of Palue is inhabited and about 7,000 people live there.

The victims of the eruption had been in the exclusion zone, drawn last year to prevent any of the inhabitants from being killed.  An investigation is under way to determine why the victims were within the forbidden area.

There are victims that have not been counted yet, some of them children, but rescue squads cannot yet go in, because of the intense heat.

The eruption lasted nearly four hours, and the volcanic ash travelled for more than 6,500 feet from the crater.
