MERS OUTBREAK CONTINUES APACE: EIGHT NEW CASES ARE OFFICIALLY RECORDED IN SAUDI ARABIA

The World Health Organization has published the latest report on the MERS coronavirus outbreak in Saudi Arabia.

Eight new cases have been recorded, after what seemed to be a break of almost two weeks in which no new cases had been reported.

The new cases were recorded in the Asir province of the Arabian peninsula and one in the UAE.  Two of the patients who contracted the disease have died so far.  The Saudi health authorities reiterate that the two deceased patients had severe pre-existing conditions that contributed, or at least hastened, the patient's death.

All the other cases, except one, of new Mers cases are in people with underlying medical conditions. The single patient who is free from such preexisting condition is asymptomatic.
The global tally of the outbreak is 102 cases, with 49 deaths recorded so far.

The WHO, however, continues to ask for vigilance from the states that have been affected and from the international community, but has not yet called for any quarantines or point of transit checkpoints.
