A new drug trial is showing promising results in treating a stubborn disease, that so far, has never been successfully cured.
The trial, which was done with 70 patients already suffering from chronic hepatitis C, resulted in all patients being cured of the debilitating disease.
The experimental drug, Sofosbuvir, was administered to the trial subjects in conjunction with Ribavirin, a drug that is already on the market.
The best treatment currently available, which includes weekly injections of interferon have horrible side effects and do not provide a cure. The new joint therapy, studied in the above trial, promises instead to be able to provide a permanent solution.
The therapy is long lasting: the double medication trial did entail taking oral compounds for six months. But all the patients showed no signs of the disease already at the 12th week mark.
The side effects of the therapy, furthermore, were mild to moderate.
