UPDATE: THE CDC HAS RAISED THE NUMBER OF CASES TO 124 AS OF THURSDAY 2.14.13
A Salmonella outbreak has now reached its 99th case, prompting authorities to notify the public.
The strain, known as Salmonella Heidelberg, has been linked to chicken, and is predominantly in the Washington/Oregon states at this time, although cases in other states have been reported.
The source of the infected chickens seems to be a farm from Kelso, Washington, identified as Foster Farms.
Although there have been no new cases since the end of December last, the infections is still considered ongoing, as not all the meat might have been consumed and some could still be in people's freezers.
Although cooking destroys the bacteria, proper precautions must be taken when preparing the chicken.
No Foster Farms products have been recalled to date.
