The interference of radicalized groups, like Al Nusra front and Islamic Frong did more than usurp the quest for democracy that sparked the Syrian civil war.
After the removal of chemical weapons and the increased cooling of relations with the Free Syrian Army, it now seems that Assad has little standing in its way, aside from Al Qaeda affiliated groups who are trying to grab territories that would provide a land bridge from Iraq and enable them to have a clear corridor to lower states such as Israel and Jordan, and later even Saudi Arabia.
But such grandiose plans by the radicalized groups, at least for now, have only heightened the chance that Assad will remain in power.
The Islamic Front and Al Nusra have taken control this week of the Bab al-Hawa crossing into Turkey, a crucial channel for provisions, medication and arms. This passage is even more important that the one on the border with Jordan.
In response, Turkey has shut down all border crossings.
This development, if it holds true, could spell the end for the Free Syrian Army, or at least those contingents that rely on the Turkish border crossing for re-supply.
