Although Putin has ordered blanket security over the whole Sochi region, troubling signs that the separatist rebels are not cowered was evidenced by the discovery of five bodies in Stavropol.
Although the city is 190 miles from Sochi, it is connected geographically with the area the separatist rebels want to become independent from Russia proper.
There are no news as to who the victims are, or the reason for their demise, but authorities are very tight lipped about the finding, which reveals a certain skittishness about it. The response however, is telling.
The
governor of the region, Vladimir Vladimirov has responded to the
finding by saying that he had ordered police authorities to annihilate
or detain criminals connected with the case, a statement that reflects
the hard line adopted by Putin against his foes.
The bodies of the victims were found in cars, riddled with bullets, in two separate locations. Near one of the locations a homemade bomb was found in a bucket.
Another news agency has reported that a sixth body might also have been found. That same report advanced the notion that two of the victims had been taxi drivers.
