A new group is claiming to be participating in the offensive against the Sochi Olympics.
Already separatists groups, Chechen and Caucasian Muslims had reiterated that their presence would be felt at the Olympics. The head of the Chechen groups is now believed to be dead, together with his deputy in a covert pushback by the Putin's administration.
But the newcomer is truly a worrisome symptoms of a growing malaise that seems to be engulfing much of Asia and the Middle East. This group is affiliated with Al Qaeda and is travelling from Pakistan to join the Chechen fight.
A video was released by the new group, called Islamic Jihad Union, whose fighters are safely ensconced in Pakistan, in which they have made a pledge to attack the Sochi games.
The leader of this new group, called Amin Abu Usama, has drawn a parallel between the Sochi Olympics and the Nazi Olympics of 1936. The video also makes mention of the twin Volgograd bombings, which are believed to have been carried out by the Chechen rebel group.
The reason for their 'intervention' is claimed in the video to be their intention to see an end to Muslim repression in the Caucasus region. In any case, the presence of Al Qaeda affiliate poses new questions about the future of the Caucasus, if these foreign groups join the fight.
