KENYA MALL ATTACK TERRORIST TRIAL TO BEGIN IN KENYA

The trial of a handful of suspects indicted for the Kenya Mall shooting and terrorist attack is set to begin today.

The Somali terrorist behind the attack all are believed to belong to the Al-Shabab group. The attack was claimed to be in retaliation for the entry of Kenyan troops in Somali territory a year before.

Four suspects will stand trial today.  However, these are not the perpetrators of the attack but are accused of aiding and abetting in providing safe shelter to those who did.

Because of the high profile case, the four suspects were not released on bail, and the suspected gunmen and other co-conspirators are believed to have already fled Kenya.  Some however believe that they were killed or killed themselves during the siege and shooting that followed the initial detonation of a powerful bomb which collapsed part of the mall.

In fact four bodies in the Mall remain ,to this date, unidentified, and are believed to be those of the perpetrators of the shootings.

Kenyan officials have responded to the gruesome terrorist attack by saying that they will not be cowered by the attack or the promise of future ones, and that their troops will remain in place in Somalia.

The Kenyan military is part of multi-national contingent of several nations who are trying to bring areas of Somalia under the jurisdicition of the Somali government.  Large swaths of the Somali countryside are in the hands of rebels, who are refusing to lay down their arms and be ruled by the current government.
