HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN 'FREEZE' A RELATIONSHIP: NEW TECHNOLOGY SHOWN TO LOWER THE STRENGH OF THE RELATIONSHIP

Until phones were invented that allowed people to communicate virtually, people who fell into an argument could only resolve it face to face.

Virtual communication is changing the texture of communication, if not the content.  Teens are less aware and learn less and less the art of effective communication and dealing with people on a personal basis.  Dismissing someone virtually leads to diminished growth of character and maturity, scientists have observed.

But now it seems that particular science is also applicable to adults.

When adults in a relationship choose to resolve, or try to, a problem through texting, without the body clues, the eye contact and so forth, the level of the relationship itself can become less deep.

More particularly, is the pattern of texting, versus a live conversation or communication.  The pattern of those texts is both an indication and a factor of how the relationship stands and will proceed.

In a recent study, researchers observed that as many as 82% of all the people in the study group traded text messages many times a day.   And the content of the messages was revealing of how the couple used communication to keep the relationship going.

The issue is that without the visual clues that are available in a live conversation, the texts can actually degrade the conversation and diminish both the effect and the comprehension of the texted message.

Oddly enough, if the man was the more frequent texters, the relationship was more likely to flounder.  And that may be because men who want to distance themselves choose texting over live conversation.  This 'withdrawal' is a hallmark of a person who is trying to exit the relationship or manage the relationship on a lower level of commitment.

However, if the content of the messages was very loving and committal, then the relationship bond was found to be stronger.
