DUTCH TOURIST GANG RAPED IN INDIA

Although the news is nowhere on the front page of the The Hindu, worldwide the news of a further gang rape is being widely reported.

A Danish woman, of 51 years old, who had become lost in Delhi, was accosted by 6 men, who then raped her at knifepoint.   She had tried to get directions back to her hotel when the men turned on her.

A group of street dwellers have been rounded up on Tuesday.  The men are believed to be in their late teens.  They also robbed the Danish woman after the sexual violence.

According to police reports obtained anonymously, the woman had been kidnapped for three hours before she was released.  She was also beaten and kicked around.

The problem with this recurring sexual violence, especially in a city like Delhi, is that it truly sends a signal that India is not a safe place for women, and especially for women tourists.

Although the victim did not allow Indian authorities to collect physical evidence and give a medical assessment, her aspect led police to believe that she had been victimized.

There have been questions raised about this case, however, since the night concierge expressed his notion that the woman appeared calm when she finally made it back to the hotel where she was staying. However, Delhi is a hot spot for this type of violence, and another tourist, a Polish woman has been raped by a taxi driver in early January.

Although Indian authorities have passed stricter laws in the case of rape and sexual violence, there is still the impression that most cases are not prosecuted.

In the city of Ranchi a schoolgirl was brutally raped by 8 men just this week.

For those cases that are being prosecuted however, much longer sentenced, including life sentences, are now being imposed on the perpetrators

The Danish Embassy is involved in the case and is providing assistance to the victim.
