25 pilot whales have been found dead or dying on Kice Island in Florida.  This mass death follows another just a week ago, in which 7 more whales were found dead.

Some of the whales showed signs of malnutrition, but generally the cause of death is unknown.

The pod had been spotted earlier in Gordon Pass, near the coastal city of Naples, Florida.  The pod was already showing signs of being stranded.

Some of the whales were marked by Mammal Stranding Coordinator Blair Mase, of NOOA, because they were  already in a condition that indicated that the pod might not make it back to the open sea.

The whales had been first marked on Monday, but by Thursday, reports started coming in from boaters that some of the whales were beached on Kice Island, about 16 miles from where they were first spotted.

Of the 23 dead whales, 16 were females, and nine were males.

Necropsies carried out on some of the whales showed that they were in an emaciated state. All of them also had an empty stomach.
