THE IRANIAN NUCLEAR DEAL COULD BE BLOCKED IN THE SENATE

The nuclear agreement just reached with Iran could suffer serious setback and pose new dangers, if it fails to be subscribed by US Senators.

The lack of such consensus could fatally undermine the nuclear agreement process and in itself could become a reason for Iran's resuming of its nuclear program.

The nuclear agreement, although doubted by some as insufficient to curb Iran's ambitions, is a great step forward and was reached because of rigid sanctions and intense diplomatic efforts.

The problem however, is that the great gains made through the nuclear negotiations could be seriously undermined by special interests in the Senate.

Already some Senators have voiced their intent to either block or try to effect changes to the nuclear deal, placing the whole process in jeopardy.

At the heart of the questions are special interests.  With the excuse that the nuclear deal does not go far enough, at least 59 Senators are proposing a separate plan, which calls for even stricter sanctions on Iran.  But most of these Senators are pro-Israeli supporters, and in the end, also associated with the hawkish military complex, both of whom are still advocating for a strike on Iran.

Worse still, the entire agreement could fail to be tabled for a vote, allowing it in essence to fail entirely.

For its part, Iran has already signified its displeasure with the potential stalemate and has reiterated its will to resume its program if it is not resolved, and in particular its uranium enrichment program.
