CHINA'S MOMENTOUS DECISIONS INCLUDE A LAXER BIRTH POLICY

A decade old policy of birth management in China, which has allowed the country to become the powerhouse it now is, might finally be relaxed, at least in part, together with other forward looking policies that China is implementing at this time.

Eager to join the rest of the world,  China has considered its one child policy vital to its ability to compete and prosper, which it has in many ways. But the negative publicity, and the often absurd enforcement of the policy has garnered much negative publicity, which China loathes in principle and traditionally.

This change is however, of great importance for China.  It will now allow couple to have two children and in some special cases more, so that it will maintain zero population growth, but avoid the population contraction which is miring Russia, and could possibly undermine its industrial growth.

One of the reasons for the shift is also the fact that with the one child policy, couples tended to abort female children, or to favor the male child because he is seen as a breadwinner who will support his parents.  But the consequences of the one child policy also meant that the elderly did not have enough caretakers.  Another consequence is that there are more males than females, and that kind of population shift can cause serious consequences.

Many other reforms were announced today by China, including one that is for the books: the abolition of labor camps for rehabilitation, an abusive system in which many people were thrown without any recourse of judicial review.
