DEPRESSION'S ECONOMIC COST : DEPRESSION'S TOLL LEADS TO ITS CLASSIFICATION AS SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DISABILITY

Depression is not just what people imagine as an intolerable mood that leads to suicide.  Its variations and hues are as varied as the people who suffer from it.

But the toll its symptoms, mild or severe, exact on sufferers is so great that it has now being named as the second leading cause of disability in the world.

The two parameters that have placed depression in that position, are the (YLD), or years lost because of disease-specific premature death, and the estimated measure of disease burden, or disability adjusted life years (DALYs).

Because poor and third world countries do not keep statistics on the disease, the possibility that depression could actually be the leading cause of disability worldwide is all too real.

Disability from depression affects people more often in the working years, and women disproportionately.

The result of the study has prompted a global plan to both track and implement remedies that could mitigate the burden of the disease.
