Just a week ago a man, intent on changing his infant girl's diaper on the front seat of his car, was shot several times together with his baby. While the father survived, the six month succumbed to her wounds later at the hospital.
Shots rang out from the streets, one of many incidents of the kind in Chicago. Both the father and the infant were hit by a barrage of gunfire.
People however are finally getting tired and are fighting back.
A citywide protest was organized to highlight the incredible number of victims who succumb to random gunfire. Passerbys, children at play, and sometimes in the very place where everyone seeks safety: one's own home.
Police say some sources have doubted the version of the story however. The infant girl had multiple wounds, but after close observation at the post-mortem, all the wounds seem to have been caused by a single bullet.
The father however, has a record, and is a known gang member. The police believe that the father was the intended target, not the child.
That however, does not take away that a child is dead. And she is dead because of street violence and the ready availabilty of guns. Whether or nor the father is a gang member does not diminish the tragedy that has occurred.
Basketball Star Derrick Rose has offered to pay for the funeral services for the child.
