Bulgaria has hobbled along economically since the iron curtain lifted. There has always been a scarcity of jobs.
But now, the austerity measures and high cost of heating gas has caused protest and even immolations.
Just today, the sixth men so far to immolate himself in protest for the economic conditions and austerity, was a 41 year old man.
The man, whose name is being withheld, was unemployed, and came from a village called Sillistra. He has been moved to the city of Varna in the hope of saving his life.
Just last month state wide protests brought down the center-right cabinet of Boiko Borisov. A new election has been ordered to take place in the month of May.
Bulgaria has some of the lowest wages in Europe, an average of 500 dollars monthly, and pensions are much less than that.
Resources are also becoming scarce, including food.
