MORE THAN 1,000 DEAD DUCKS NOW FOUND FLOATING IN CHINESE RIVER

Pictures of hundreds of dead ducks have surfaced from the Chinese press yesterday.  In a repeat of the news of two weeks ago, when thousands of dead pigs washed up in a river near Shanghai, the chinese waterways seem to have become the dumping ground for all diseased farm animals.

The problem however, is that whereas pig viruses are not always contagious to man, avian viruses necessitate a closer inspection to safeguard from zootonic epidemics.

This time the carcasses were found inthe Sichuan river, in Pengshan province.    The river in this case is not used for drinking water, so that whatever disease killed the ducks it will not find its way directly into people's homes.

However, the local officials are concerned.   Cause of death at the moment remains undetermined. Many of the ducks were in an advanced state of decomposition, because they had been concealed in sacks and not seen right away.

In this case, just as the pig dump in Shanghai, the carcasses have been dumped upstream and not from the locals.  In the meantime, dead pigs continue to be found at the previous location.

The Chinese villagers are concerned that their waterways have become the dumping grounds of farmers and other concerns alike.
