New allegations are surfacing in the horse meat scandal that has enveloped the firm Spanghero, the company at the heart of the horse meat scandal.

Now it seems that unfit lamb meat has been found in the meat mixture from the Spanghero firm.

The meat is deemed unfit because it has been scraped off the bone, a practice that was banned to prevent the spread of mad cow disease.  Mad Cow disease, or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, is a degenerative disease that is always fatal, and is passed on from the consumed meat to the human brain in the forms of loose prions.  In order to avoid any spread of the disease, any meat that is from the spinal, medullar, and cerebral tissue is banned, but also meat that is scraped off the bone, because in so doing, some of the bone medulla cells could contaminate the meat.

French authorities have released information yesterday, that they have seized 57 tonnes of the unfit lamb meat from the processing plant.

After the plant was found to have passed on 750 tonnes of horse meat as beef, it was allowed to continue operations of mincemeat and sausages, although its license was suspended.

The company has been ordered to recall any product that might contain the substandard lamb meat.  However, it is still operating.

The scandal has tainted big names in Europe, such as Nestle, Buitoni and other famous household names.
