In a peculiar and unforeseen move, Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega announced yesterday that he would seek legal recourse in the return of lands that were lost by Nicaragua in distant 1824.
The land is adjacent to Managua, and is currently under Costa Rican rule. The province in question, called Guanacaste, is adjacent to Nicaragua's territory and constitutes one fifth of Costa Rican land, a substantial amount of land.
Guanacaste is Costa Rica's tourist mecca. It is obvious why Nicaragua would seek the return of the land, but it is doubtful that Ortega can present a valid argument to seize that territory.
The central contention of the land claim is that Costa Rica never obtained that large swath of land through a war or legal claim, but seized it through unjustified force, in essence 'stealing' the land from Nicaragua. Ortega made the point during a military ceremony.
He is seeking negotiation talks with Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla on the matter, who has already rejected the request.
