A number of Syrian doctors and international medical organization are sounding the alarm for Syria's medical infrastructure.
Without quick intervention, the medical system will collapse, leaving thousands of people in need of immediate care with nowhere to go.
The doctors are asking that the Syrian government lift the restrictions that have shackled doctors from treating and providing medication for patients. Enacted by the Assad regime to prevent rebel fighters from receiving care, the measure has devastated both civilians and fighting communities in Syria.
The United Nations has also issued a plea to neighboring states and other world powers to try to convince the Assad regime to set aside the cruel measure.
Syria is already spiraling in a vortex of medical chaos. Doctors have been killed or impeded from serving, supplies, medicine and facilities have been destroyed by the conflict or maliciously by the regime to prevent rebel fighters from receiving care. Health workers and doctors who have treated rebels or suspected civil war participants have been jailed in many cases.
The authors of the plea, together with Syrian medical staff are asking that all governments and entities in the civil war, allow doctors to serve, and to stop attacks on medical facilities and medical providers.
The situation in Syria is particularly dire for the children, who are not able to get vaccinations. Any child under three is now unvaccinated in Syria and refugee camps, which could spark epidemics of childhood pathologies on an unprecedented scale. The lost generation, as children caught in the civil war is called, faces traumas and dangers that could significantly add to the already catastrophic death toll the conflict has meted.
