ALCOHOL'S GROWING THREAT

A new assessment of alcohol related illnesses show that alcohol consumption, and its effects, are on the rise.

The new study, done by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, shows that alcohol contributes to the global health picture in a very significant way.  It is in fact, third among the chief causes of mortality or disease.

Alcohol consumption, can by itself be the cause of 200 separate diseases or injuries, including some types of cancer.

The heaviest consumers of alcohol reside in Europe and Sub-saharan Africa, the latter in addition to quantity is also on the hook for quality, since the alcohol consumed there is often toxic and produced at home.

The least amount of alcohol was consumed in the Middle East, and North Africa.

Canadians and North Americans drink on average 50% more compared to the global consumption.  They also do the most bingeing, which is considered dangerous, since the drinker can consume large quantities at one time, which is far more damaging to internal organs and far more dangerous for injuries.

The interesting portion of the study also deals with how taxation and other deterrents have been successfull in slowing the growing trend.  In most cases, heavier taxes did nothing to stop the request for alcohol, especially in those locales, such as many African countries, where people rely on home brewed alcohol.
