CHINA OFFICIALS FIND 600 DEAD PIGS FLOATING IN THE RIVER HUANGPU, NEARSHANGHAI

A report has been filed by China Daily news on a finding that has authorities very concerned.

About 900 dead pigs have so far been found floating downriver on the Huangpu in Songjiang section.

The officials are retriving the carcasses with the hope of ascertaining what killed the beasts.

Officials are still at a loss as to what is the cause of the beasts' death or where they came from.

The river provides drinking water for Shanghai, but officials don't believe the quality of the water has been affected.

The Shanghai Agriculture Committee have carried out bio-safety treatment and pulled the carcasses out of the river.

The authorities have declared that they have not received any news of animal epidemics in the city.  However, given the numbers of the carcasses retrieved, the event does point to a possible epidemic as the culprit for such a large number of deaths.

It remains to be seen if this is a case in which a farmer, afraid of losing his entire stock has tried to conceal an epidemic from authorities, or if this was an accidental death.

Authorities are still pulling carcasses out of the river, so the final number might rise in the end.

The fact that the Chinese authorities have divulged the news freely speaks to the level of alert this incidence has warranted.
