GUN CRAZY : SECOND GEORGIA TOWN APPROVES MANDATORY GUN OWNERSHIP FOR ALL DENIZENS

As if the recent events have not been enough to dampen gun buyer's spirits, a Georgia town is now moving to require all its citizens to own a gun.

Yes, that would be a mandatory ownership of firearms.  For everyone, or almost.

This is the second town with such a requirement in the state, although the other town also in Georgia which we spoke of in a related article, has not yet fully enforced it.

The small town of 1,300 near Atlanta unanimously approved the measure at a meeting.  Now the citizens will have a chance to say their piece before the city takes up the proposal for ratification in Spring.

The city's officers are justifying this move as a crime 'deterrent'.  They are comparing the law and the enforcement of it, to a signal for all those who have criminal intent.  It's their ADT, they contend.

But some serious questions must be raised on this matter.  Are sexual offenders, criminals and other offenders now able to acquire a gun, and how are they to decide what level of crime is grounds for denial?

One could argue that in this case, if the criminal knows that the owner is armed, that it will too bring a firearm, possibly one which is more powerful.

Unfortunately, the town Police Chief has placed himself fully behind the idea, saying that the law is a message to the country that its dwellers support the Constitution.

Outrageously enough, the city's officers contend that criminals will not be allowed to own guns, and neither will people with physical disabilities, nor 'paupers', as if people who are homeless could be in less need of defending themselves, or incapable of it.

The physical disability exemption is a real head scratcher.  If one is physically disabled, wouldn't that call for better protection? Wouldn't a person on a wheelchair for example be a better candidate for owning a gun?

Somehow in all this there seems to be an effort from the local police force to delegate some of the policing duties onto the citizen.  With budget constraints getting worse from the budget crunch nationwide, this sounds as if the police is hoping that the citizen can take care of itself.

But most people already own guns.  300 million firearms are circulating freely in this country as we speak.  It has not changed a thing when it comes to lowering crime incidence.

However, the city officers have been gracious enough to grant an exemption to those who oppose gun ownership on religious grounds.
