Israeli intelligence has released a statement today that it believes the Syrian dictator al Assad might use chemical weapons against the rebels.
This plan, which is a contingency to be considered once the rebels would have been close to victory shows that al Assad has no intention of stepping down.
The Israeli spokesman also said that Assad was in control of his chemical cache for the in Damascus and that he is believed to be making preparations for the use of the lethal weapons. According to the spokesman "he is not ready yet, but he is making preparations to use them."
While the consensus is that the rebels are getting stronger, there are strong fears that many of the rebel forces are made of foreign fighters who are advocating an islamic state once Assad falls.
The situation, according to Israeli intelligence is becoming very dangerous. And that is because Assad's fall would weaken its allies, Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah. Which could very well result in these other regional powers to enter the conflict so that they can maintain the power they have now. Iran in particular, will lose the ability to transfer weaponry through Syria to Hezbollah.
Iran and Hezbollah are training an army that could rise to 100,000 members, in preparation for Assad's fall, when they will deploy this trained army to protect their territory and their assets in Syria.
