Four live bombs were discovered in Northern Ireland's Londonderry district yesterday.
A van was positioned to detonate in front of the police station. Its roof had been cut out to allow for the detonating charges to better hit upwards and into the building target of the explosion. The van was intercepted as it was driven on its way to the location where it would have been detonated.
If the bombs had not been discovered it could have killed scores of people.
Police authorities have related that the charges had been prepared and were ready to be set off.
Three people have been arrested overnight in the incident. More than 100 families had to be evacuated for safety purposes during the night time operation that defused the bombs.
The size of the charges, and their positioning is worrisome for authorities. A set up this large and powerful had never been seen. If detonated it would have killed not just the intended targets but scores of innocent people around the epicenter of the explosion.
This intensification is an indication of a new level of engagement on the part of the suspected dissidents that have set up the operation.
