The greater awareness that derived from the sensational case of a woman raped in New Dehli not long ago seems to have produced a much more diligent reporting of rape cases against women.

In the latest case of violence against women, the Indian Express has reported that a grim case has developed in the Bhandara district, where three underage girls, ages 9-11, all three of them sisters, were abducted, raped and killed.

The police seems to be focusing on a long standing feud between the family of the girls and another family as a possible lead for the solution of the crime.

Two suspects have been detained, and they are believed to have known to girls prior to the crime.

The girls were thrown into a well where they were found by police after a report was filed that they had not returned from school.

Already calls have been made to prosecute the perpetrators harshly and swiftly.  The police has already indicated that they are willing to let the state authority prosecute them, due to the severity of the crime, and that the death penalty seems appropriate for a crime of this nature.

People in the village where the girls lived have already organized a vigorous protest against local police, saying that they have not acted quickly enough to save the girls.

It seems the Indian people have become much more sensitized to the issue of violence against women and are quickly mobilizing to ensure that such cases are not neglected and are fully prosecuted.
