UK TO BREAK RANK IN TRYING TO FURNISH SYRIAN OPPOSITION WITH ARMS

It seems the British government is eager to furnish arms to the Syrian opposition in contrast with the EU wide ban on doing so.  The ban or embargo on arms is seen as a way to avoid placing in the hands of the rebels powerful weapons which could later end up in the hands of terror groups.

Only last week the news of an Israeli strike against facilities inside Syria reiterated the fear that Hezbollah, a group believed to be on the ground in Syria as part of the rebel force, could get their hands on powerful or sophisticated weapons which could later be used for terror activity in the middle East.

In addition, the death of a Iranian commander in Syria has reaffirmed the presence of foreign forces.

However, the move to let the ban expire is supported by a handful of other EU countries, including  France, some have suggested.   Other countries instead have voiced strong opposition to letting the ban expire.

This is a developing story for which definitive answers will not be had until the EU votes in Bruxelles later this month.

The embargo expires on February 28
