The Center for Constitutional Rights in New York has released news that it has filed a complaint in the International courts in The Hague against Pope Benedict for 'crimes against humanity'
The filing, together with 20,000 pages of supporting evidence will be evaluated by the ICC in the Hague on whether or not to accept the complaint.
The complaint was made on behalf of victims of the church's policies in regards to the numerous cases of sexual abuse and molestations.
Pope Benedict, before he ascended to Peter's throne, was in charge of the sexual abuse cases and their management.
Pope Benedict is not the only object of the complaint. Together with him, other policy setting church officials have been named: Cardinals Levada, Sodano and Bertone.
Pope Benedict's resignation also offers added opportunity for prosecution since his removal from the Vatican would leave him without the immunity protection he enjoyed as a head of state. According to the CCR, 'the Pope bears responsibility not just in his official capacity for the church-wide policy of systematic and widespread concealment and enabling of the crimes, but he bears individual responsibility in a number of cases in which he ensured that perpetrators would be protected and left in place to assault more victims'.
The CCR has filed the complaint on behalf of the victim members of SNAP, a support group for clergy abuse victims that includes civilians, nuns, priests and rabbis.
