RUSSIA - US RELATIONS FRAY OVER DAMASCUS BLAST

The recent bombing in Damascus has brought more devastation to an already devastated country.  Just yesterday, the latest incident in Damascus has claimed 53 lives, although the toll is said to be higher by some rebel forces.

In the wake of the tragedy, the UN had allegedly prepared a statement that was to condemn the act.  But Russia is claiming that the US has blocked the UN from releasing the statement.

The bomb in Damascus, among other things, has apparently damaged the nearby Russian Embassy.

No one has claimed responsibility for the Damascus attack as of yet, and Syria's government has pointed the finger at extremist sects that are in Syria from foreign countries. The fundamentalist Nursa rebel group has claimed that it has carried out most terrorist acts since the beginning of the civil war.  However there is no confirmation on the people truly responsible for the bombing.

Russians are clamoring that the US is employing a double standard when denouncing acts of terrorism.  They contend that all acts of terrorism against civilians should be condemend.
At the same time however, Russia is a powerful member of the UN council and its leverage is the chief cause for Al-Assad's ability to remain in power in the face of a bloody and ruinous civil war.

Other bombings have been reported yesterday, and the total of victims is believed to be close to 90 for that day alone in the capital.  Outside of Damascus a further 200 people were believed to have been killed, bringing the total of victims  for just one day to almost 300.

The UN believes that the total toll in the lenghty civilian war has cost nearly 70,000 lives.
