India's opposition party was hit by a bomb attack last week, during an important rally. The attack left 6 dead, and many more injured.
If this is the prelude to next year's election, India is in for a very rough time.
The attack was carried out by remote control ignition of seven explosive devices, much like IUDs. They were timed to go off as party leader Modi was giving an important speech in the state of Bihar.
The opposition party has already accused the police authority of collusion of some sort, through a very lax security detail deployed for the opposition leader, which easily enabled the terrorists to place and detonate the bombs.
In fact, the preparation were so lacking that the party's representative in the Indian parliament has called the incident a "gross intelligence failure".
The government, instead, has signified their belief that the terrorist acts were carried out by islamists belonging to the India Mujahideen. The authorities in the province have already arrested 15 people they believe are connected to the incident.
Rahul Ghandi of the majority Congress party has already expressed his fear that he too, like his father Rajiv, could be killed by Tamil terrorists or other terrorist factions during the upcoming campaign.
Truth be told, security measures in India are dismal. There is no contingent, or coordination. Only a few men are dispersed to oversee the rallies and speeches.
There are no screening machines, and more importantly there is no cutting of the mobile phone lines to prevent remote detonation.
There is only hope that this incident might prompt authorities to exercise better oversight and vigilance in the campaign leading to the elections.
