SIX NEW CASES OF MERS CORONAVIRS IN SAUDI ARABIA : THE VIRUS SEEMS TO CONTINUE AT A STEADY PACE SO FAR

The Mers coronavirus outbreak seems to continue at a very even pace.  Although the natural reservoir is believed to be the bat, scientists are now focusing on possible multiple animal sources that allow the virus to cross the zoonotic barrier.

In the latest Disease Outbreak Notification, the WHO relates news of six additional Mers cases in the Arabian peninsula.

Six new cases have been confirmed in laboratory testing as of October 4th.  All patients are from the Riyadh region.  Dates of onset for all patients seems to be between Sept. 15 to the 26.  Only one patient exhibits mild symptoms, all others are hospitalized.

Three of the new cases had been in contact with older reported patients.  Two have no contact with either animal or human possibly infected with the disease, so far.

All prophylactic guidelines remain the same. No new directives have been issued by the WHO.
