Doing housework has been regarded as a somewhat energy intensive activity so far, but new research points to the fact that it might not be a substitute for regular exercise, unless of course, the person does housework as a profession, for a few hours a day.
Even some of the more taxing activities in the house, may not prime the body and the circulatory system to the same level as exercise.
The guidelines issued by the UK's National Health System point to a minimum of 150 minutes of exercise a week to have significant benefits to physical and mental fitness.
Gardening, on the other hand, does constitute exercise, especially if it includes digging, lifting and other more vigorous activities.
However, a mixture of housework, gardening and other activity like brisk walking or similar non gym routine, can be equal to the prescribed exercise regimens to achieve the same level of fitness.
