Formula One has always been synonymous with macho values, and the scuderias until recently probably never envisioned a team with a female driver.
But one woman did break that barrier. Blond, pretty and smart, Maria de Villota had become the third, or 'green hat', pilot for a Formula One scuderia.
But the dawn of the Formula One female driver was short lived. Today sad news of the death of Maria de Villota circled the globe.
The Spanish driver was found in her hotel room, inexplicably stricken by some unknown malaise.
Villota was a fille d'art, her father had been a formula One Driver. Emilio de Villota had coached his daughter until she finally reached the pinnacle of racing.
She was a courageous driver; in 2012, she lost her right eye after a crash in Duxford Airfield, during testing for the Marussia scuderia.
