An investigation done by the UN on its own operations in Zimbabwe during a deadly cholera epidemic has brought to light facts that point to the woeful mismanagement of and outright lies from the agency's operators at the time of the outbreak.
The epidemic, which started in 2008, made thousands of victims.
The investigation found that the UN bosses in the country did not want to upset Mugabe at the time of the epidemic and therefore kept the occurrence secret. The lack of disclosure made it possible for the epidemic to quickly spread.
The Head of the Humanitarian office in Zimbabwe alerted his superiors of the incipient epidemic, but was met with inaction. In addition, his request for intervention apparently caused him to be fired.
The UN is now suggesting that senior UN officials should now be disciplined for their lack of action. None of the senior officials are still in office.
The UN is not divulging any former information on the case since it is still pending in the courts.
