BANGLADESH GARMENT FACTORY OWNERS ARRESTED AFTER 324 PEOPLE DIE IN BUILDING COLLAPSE

The latest tally in the deadly Bangladesh garment factory has risen to 324, and by no means it is expected to remain at that level.

The only good news so far, is that two of the factory's principals, have been arrested.

Bazlus Samad, and Mahmudur Rahman, have both turned themselves in to authorities.

The sole remaining person, the actual owner of the factory is still on the run.   He was ordered not to leave the country.  He had obtained the illegal permit to build the additional floors with the Savar Municipal Corp., a lower body that does not enforce building standards according to law, instead of the more strict Dhaka development authority. In addition substandard material and design were applied to the construction, making the building highly unstable.  As a matter of fact the building had developed severe faults and cracks the day before the crash, and people had been warned from re-entering the building.

The Rana building disaster is the third lethal incident in the past six months. A nascent youth group, called the Awami league, has blocked roads in and around Dhaka.  They are also calling for the closing of all garment factories in the city, in the hopes that safer accommodations can be made or found.

Luckily, and at great risk to the rescuers, 2,408 people have been rescued from the site.
