In what seems to be a growing trend of loss of privacy rights, the legislation proposed to stop employers from asking for a person's facebook password has been defeated.
The legislation would have made it impossible for employers to scour a person's Facebook page in advance of their acceptance for employment. The decision was defeated by a 224-188 vote, which heavily favored business interests vs personal privacy.
The problem of employers becoming more and more involved in their employee's private lives is a growing one. Not only a prospective employee is asked to surrender the facebook password, but all social sites to which he/she contributes, including Twitter, LInkedIn and others.
The legislation was defeated thanks in great measure to the Republicans' nay votes.
Only Maryland successfully passed a law last year that makes it illegal for employers to ask for such private passwords.
