THE DEVASTATING TREND TOWARD THINNESS : HOW SWEDISH MODEL AGENCY RECRUIT PATIENTS FROM EATING DISORDER CLINICS

In what seems to be one of the most worrisome trends in fashion, Swedish doctors are relating news of modeling agencies recruiting anorexia victims, often grabbing them as they are leaving the rehabilitation clinics.

In Stockholm, there have been reports of talent scouts approaching some of the most emaciated girls as they were wheeled out of the Stockholm Center for Eating Disorder.

The alarm was sounded by one of the doctors at the clinic, Dr. Anna-Maira af Sanderberg. She has released statement saying that "We think this is reprehensible.  People have stood outside our clinic and tried to pick up our girls because they know they are very thin."

In fact, even amidst calls for a more realistic female form to be portrayed in fashion magazines, some of the newest and more famous models are excruciatingly thin.

Some of the girls that leave the clinic are not even of age, and some were patients at the clinic for almost a year.

The recruitment, in everyone's mind, sends the wrong signal to people at large, but especially for the patient who is rewarded for something that could be fatal to them.

While some countries, like Israel, have actually passed laws that prohibit the employment of women who are too thin in catwalks and adverts, many others do not.
