Not too many people now remember the Rugby finals in South Africa in 1995. But those who attended remember the momentous occasions also by a low fly by of a South African Airways jetliner, Boeing 747.
The pilot of that plane, Laurie Kay, died yesterday in Johannesburg at 67.
Kay of lately had put his obvious skills recently to good use by flying helicopters in anti-rhino poaching patrols.
His most memorable moment was his breathtaking low fly over Ellis Park Stadium during the finals of the rugby match between South Africa and New Zealand. South Africa went on to win the match. This match was particularly important, as it was the first match after the fall of apartheid, and was immortalized in the movie Invictus.
