H1N1 MAKING A COMEBACK IN VENEZUELA

Although Venezuela is in the beginning of its wintry season, it is already experiencing a quickly widening surge of H1N1 influenza.  In just one week, the number of cases has risen by almost 60%.  Already 1,138 cases have been registered.

The numbers pertain to a period between 5/26-6/1.  Most of the cases occurred in the northern coast and western Venezuela.

The Health ministry says that the situation is not bound to increase uncontrollably, since the yearly vaccination program has already reached 3 million people.  They also say that they are well stockpiled with antiviral drugs to combat it and that the disease in itself is not lethal, but only needs aggressive treatment in those people who have established pathologies, such as HIV, diabetes and other immune weakening systems.

Venezuela however, is the place where H1N1 first appeared in 2009.
