Like a veritable modern hunt for an Egyptian pharaoh, the search for Jimmy Hoffa's body has reached mythological proportion.
Finding his body however, is important. If he was killed, as many have reason to believe, by the mob, then being able to determine what happened to him is fundamental to bring the responsible parties to justice.
The latest search is focusing on what is described as a credible tip by an ex mobster, who was in jail when Hoffa disappeared.
It has been widely believed that Hoffa was killed after meeting with mob minions, to settle what had been a power struggle between the Teamsters' boss and the racket which had overtaken the union.
It was after all, not long after a meeting with two alleged mob bosses, that Hoffa vanished.
The latest report have it that a cadaver dog has given signals that a body might be buried underneath what are the remnants of a cement slab, once the foundation for a shed now destroyed.
If it turns out to be true, and there is every reason to believe it could, since this time the FBI have done their due diligence in researching the tip before setting out for another wild goose chase, then the enduring mystery might finally be over and with it all the urban legends that have arisen from the depths of its mystery will be silenced.
There are many people who are almost disappointed that he could be found. This is a man, after all, who was admired as much as he was reviled. But he was a father and a husband too, and although his frantic lifestyle might have shortened his life in the end, it is important that his family finally find out what happened to the Teamsters' boss and be able to bury his remains.
At the same time, finding Hoffa is really more to do with solving a cold case, just like any other, and bringing criminals to justice, if they are still alive, than in some glorious display of federal power and dogged determination. While everyone awaits eagerly, the police and federal authorities, who have searched wide and long for Hoffa's body might finally be able to see an end to their quest. Or will they?
