Denmark has had its woes of growing pains due to unfettered immigration. Now the backlash has reached a level that could be described as discriminatory by some, with a lawmaker asking that danish citizens only 'use' danish prostitutes' services and shun foreigners, to curb foreign sex workers immigration.
Pia Adelsteen, of the DPP, or Danish People's Party, has made her remarks after a poll revealed that one in seven men in Denmark is willing to patronize a prostitute knowing that she is a victim of sex trafficking.
The idea, although discriminatory, does have some merit. There is no way to find out who in the country is prostituting themselves freely and who is forced into the sex trade.
Since prostitution is legal in Denmark, the only way to stem the increasing volume of prostitution by women, or men, forced into that work, is to stop people from frequenting places and people who are not from Denmark, according to the lawmaker.
The problem is that already half of Denmark's prostitutes are foreigners. Most of them come from Thailand, the others from Eastern Europe and a smaller percentage from Africa.
The DPP has been the centre right's most favourite party since it allowed the passing of some of the strictest immigration regulations in Europe.
